Chautauqua Theater Company Announces Schedule for 25th Anniversary Season

Artistic Directors Vivienne Benesch and Ethan McSweeny are pleased to announce the schedule for CTC’s 25th anniversary season as the professional theater and conservatory on the grounds of the Chautauqua Institution.

This summer, the company’s schedule features three full productions, two New Play Workshops, and one special one-night-only event in the Institution’s Amphitheater.

Tickets may be purchased by calling the Chautauqua Institution box office at (716) 357-6250, or by visiting the Chautauqua Theater Company website at www.CTCompany.org

Death of a Salesman

by Arthur Miller | directed by Ethan McSweeny

June 28 through July 6

Salesman Willy Loman is overdue for retirement, but he can't get off the road and he can't make a sale. His adult sons have moved back home, and his patient wife is at the end of her wits. Emmy award winner Stuart Margolin and Amy Van Nostrand return to CTC after their triumphant pairing in last year’s Ah, Wilderness! to star. Deena Burke, Jack Davidson and Keith Randolph Smith round out the guest artist cast in Arthur Miller's iconic masterpiece exposing the dark side of the American dream.

Reckless

by Craig Lucas | directed by Matthew Arbour

July 19 though 27

T'was the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring ... except for Rachel's husband who has taken a contract out on her life! She leaps out the bedroom window of her otherwise perfect suburban existence and into the snows of Craig Lucas' absurd, funny, and deeply moving comedy. Artistic director Vivienne Benesch stars in the role she first played as a student at Chautauqua twenty years ago.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

by William Shakespeare | directed by Alec Wild

August 9 through 16

By day, four mismatched lovers flee into the woods to escape harsh Athenian law. A troupe of committed (if incompetent) actors rehearses a play for the Duke's wedding celebration. Yet mayhem, mischief, and fairy magic rule the night in Shakespeare's most beloved comedy. Featuring the talents of CTC's extraordinary Conservatory, Midsummer promises to be a dazzling treat for the entire family.

CTC/NPW

New Play Workshops

July 10, 11, and 12

July 31, August 2 and 3

The New Play Workshop series introduces Chautauqua audiences to important new voices in the theatre and to the staged reading as a thrilling theatrical event in its own right. In a uniquely Chautauquan twist, CTC/NPW selects plays that correspond with the Institution’s weekly morning lecture theme. All performances are followed by a discussion with the author, director and cast.

Variations on a Theme by Anna Ziegler

Week Three: “On Writing.”

July 10, 11, and 12

Following a young playwright through her blossoming career and waning relationship, Variations on a Theme is a lyrical mediation on love and loss—and a writer’s power to put them in perspective.

Sick by Zayd Dohrn

Week Six: “Healing the Globe.”

July 31, August 2, and 3

This dark comedy digs into a mother’s paranoia about the environment of the 21st Century, the effect it has on her shut-in home schooled children, and her husband’s determination to prove it’s all in her head.

ONE NIGHT ONLY!

Every Good Boy Deserves Favor

by Tom Stoppard | Music by Andre Previn,

directed by Ethan McSweeny

With the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra

guest conducted by Timothy Muffitt

July 24

CTC makes a rare appearance on the stage of the famed Chautauqua Institution Amphitheater, joining CSO in an exciting work for orchestra and actors.
