Two-time Emmy Winner and Chautauqua Favorite Stuart Margolin Returns to CTC to Head Cast of Death of a Salesman
Chautauqua Theater Company Artistic Directors Vivienne Benesch and Ethan McSweeny are proud to announce the first production of CTC’s 25th anniversary season: Arthur Miller’s iconic masterpiece, Death of a Salesman.
Salesman Willy Loman is overdue for retirement, but he can't get off the road and he can't make a sale. Two-time Emmy award winner Stuart Margolin reunites with Chautauqua favorite Amy Van Nostrand to bring this landmark drama by the Greatest Generation’s greatest dramatist to vivid life on the Bratton stage. Broadway veterans Jack Davidson and Keith Randolph Smith join Artistic Director Ethan McSweeny and the Conservatory company in Arthur Miller's renowned classic that exposes the dark side of the American dream.
“Salesman is one of the most enduring and popular plays in the American canon,” says Mr. McSweeny. “I think it’s because everyone can see a little piece of their father in Willy Loman, and everyone understands how parental ambition is every child’s inheritance.”
“Death of a Salesman is one of those plays that you only program when you have the perfect actor in mind,” says Ms. Benesch. “What better way to kick off our 25th anniversary season than to feature Stuart Margolin, one of America’s truly great actors, in one of the American theater’s greatest roles.”
Stuart Margolin , most widely known for his two-time Emmy award-winning role as Angel in television’s long-running "The Rockford Files," returns to CTC as Willy Loman. Chautauqua audiences have thrilled to his performances in Ah, Wilderness!, The Cherry Orchard and All My Sons. His extensive filmography includes appearances in Kelly’s Heroes, Death Wish, Future World and SOB, among many others. Four decades into his illustrious career in the arts, Mr. Margolin is still active as a director, producer and film score composer.
Audiences will recall Mr. Margolin’s outstanding pairing with Amy Van Nostrand in last season’s Ah, Wilderness!. The two bring their onstage chemistry back to Bratton when Ms. Van Nostrand appears as Linda Loman. In New York, she has been seen on Broadway in The Hothouse, at The Lambs Theatre in The God Committee and in Dance With Me at The Pearl Theatre. Ms. Van Nostrand was a longtime company member at the celebrated Trinity Repertory Company and has appeared at leading regional theaters across the country.
From Broadway to Bratton, two renowned New York actors will add Arthur Miller to their numerous American theater credits in their first trips to Chautauqua. Willy’s neighbor, Charley, is played by Keith Randolph Smith, most recently seen in Manhattan Theater Club’s Come Back, Little Sheba. He has also appeared on Broadway in The Piano Lesson, King Hedley II and Salome. Also new to the Bratton stage is Jack Davidson, who will be playing the role of Willy’s elusive older brother, Ben. Mr. Davidson appeared most recently as Shelly Lavine in Glengarry Glen Ross at the Dallas Theater Center. His Broadway appearances include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Judgment at Nuremburg and Edward Albee’s Seascape.
Deena Burke joins CTC for the first time as an actor, playing The Woman, Willy’s shameful secret. Ms. Burke has appeared at The Old Globe, Pacific Theatre Ensemble, The Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Tacoma Actors Guild and The Group Theatre. She is also a nationally renowned voice teacher and has taught voice and speech to the CTC Conservatory since 2005.
Rounding out the cast are members of CTC’s esteemed Conservatory, hand-picked from the top training programs in the nation. Zach Appelman (Yale School of Drama) and Leigh Miller (National Theatre Conservatory) appear as the Loman brothers, Biff and Happy. Other Conservatory cast members include Frankie Alvarez (The Juilliard School), Josh Sauerman (Columbia University), Brooke Parks (recent graduate of the Yale School of Drama), Patrick Cullen (University of Washington), Elizabeth Larson (recent graduate of the Brown/Trinity Consortium) and Amelia Pedlow (The Juilliard School).
Heading the creative team is director Ethan McSweeny, whose numerous directing credits at CTC include last season’s The Just, as well as 2006’s The Cherry Orchard and 2005’s All My Sons. Off-Broadway, he most recently directed the New York premieres of Kate Fodor’s 100 Saints You Should Know—one of 2006’s CTC/NPW productions—and Jason Grote’s 1001.
The exceptional design team includes Lee Savage, who designed sets for last season’s The Just. Among his many credits, Mr. Savage received a Connecticut Critics Circle Award for Best Scenic Design for The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow at Yale Repertory Theatre. Costume designer Tracy Christensen’s work has been seen in Souvenir on Broadway, Stopping Traffic at The Vineyard Theatre and Meet Me In St. Louis at Irish Repertory Theatre. Previous CTC productions include All My Sons, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, The Cherry Orchard and The Art of Coarse Acting. Lighting designer Tyler Micoleau returns to Chautauqua for the first time since Bratton Theater’s opening season in 2000. Mr. Micoleau’s recent Off-Broadway credits include 1001 with Page 73 Productions, directed by Mr. McSweeny, God's Ear at the Vineyard Theatre and Rainbow Kiss with the Play Company. Composer Michael Roth makes his first visit to Chautauqua. His numerous credits include Brooklyn Boy and A Walk in the Woods on Broadway, as well as the Off-Broadway productions of The Persians and Dinner With Friends.
CTC performs in the award-winning, historic Bratton Theater. Internationally known actors, directors, designers and writers join 18 emerging artists drawn from the nation’s top training programs to form a unique company that produces more than 50 events in a 50-day summer season.
